Safety protocol update

ANCAP 2026 changes explained

From 2026, ANCAP assessment moves further toward a lifecycle view of safety: helping drivers avoid trouble, avoiding crashes, protecting people in crashes and improving post-crash outcomes.

Last updated: 18 May 2026

The new four-area framing

Safe DrivingHow well the vehicle supports the driver before danger becomes a crash scenario.
Crash AvoidanceHow effectively technology helps prevent or reduce collisions with vehicles and road users.
Crash ProtectionHow well occupants and other people are protected when a crash occurs.
Post-Crash SafetyHow the vehicle helps after an impact, including rescue, information and post-crash risk reduction.

Why this matters for buyers

The old four sub-score labels are familiar: Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Vulnerable Road User and Safety Assist. The 2026 approach makes comparisons more awkward across years because the assessment framework is evolving.

A 2026 five-star rating should not be treated as exactly equivalent to a 2022 five-star rating. Both can be useful, but they come from different test contexts.

Buyer takeaway: use the datestamp first, then read the detailed ANCAP page. Newer ratings may reflect newer safety expectations.

What we will track on Auto Insight Lab

As 2026-datestamped vehicles appear, Auto Insight Lab should keep older ANCAP pages clear about tested year, avoid mixing unlike-for-like scores too casually, and explain when a page uses pre-2026 sub-score structures.
