PHEV ute capability

PHEV ute towing and payload: the numbers behind the 3500kg headline

A 3500kg braked tow rating is useful, but it is not the same as a full work payload. For plug-in hybrid utes, battery weight, GVM, accessories and towball download can change the real-world answer.

Core idea

1) Tow rating is only one part of usable capacity

The simplest mistake is to compare only the braked towing maximum. A PHEV ute can have a strong 3500kg tow number and still be less useful for a specific buyer if payload, GVM or GCM leaves too little room for people, canopy, bullbar, tools, spare fuel, water or camping gear.

Plain-English check: add passengers, accessories, cargo and towball download before deciding whether the published payload is enough.

Use cases

3) Which buyer should care most?

PHEV capability can work well for
  • Mixed local work plus weekend towing.
  • Fleet buyers with depot charging and predictable routes.
  • Owners who want electric commuting but still need ute hardware.
Be stricter if you
  • Tow near maximum weight often.
  • Carry heavy tools, canopy, drawers and passengers together.
  • Travel remote routes where charging is not part of the routine.
