Family safety guide
ANCAP explained for families
For family buyers, ANCAP is not just a star badge. Child occupant protection, active crash avoidance, vulnerable road user protection and everyday driver assistance all matter.
The four areas families should read first
Child Occupant ProtectionRead this closely if children regularly sit in the rear. It reflects child crash protection and child restraint-related assessment areas.
Safety AssistIncludes technologies that can help avoid or reduce crashes, such as lane support, speed assistance and AEB-related systems.
Vulnerable Road User ProtectionImportant around schools, suburbs and car parks where pedestrians, cyclists and other road users are nearby.
Adult Occupant ProtectionStill central for parents and adult passengers, especially front-seat protection in common crash types.
Family checks beyond the score
- Check whether the ANCAP rating applies to the exact variant you are buying.
- Confirm second-row safety equipment, curtain airbag coverage and child-seat fitment points.
- Test visibility, reversing camera quality and parking assistance with your normal family load.
- For utes, check rear-seat comfort and child-seat access before treating a high score as a complete answer.
How this changes ute shopping
Many utes now carry strong ANCAP results, but they are still work vehicles first in layout and packaging. A family ute shortlist should combine ANCAP sub-scores with rear-seat usability, daily visibility, running costs and the way the vehicle will actually be used.
