Strong mainstream starting points
Ranger, D-MAX, HiLux, Triton and BT-50 4x4 dual-cab grades deserve the first calculation. Do not carry a maximum cab-chassis payload figure across to a heavier pick-up.
Worked towing scenario
Short answer: mainstream Ranger, D-MAX, HiLux, Triton, BT-50, Tasman and Amarok grades with a 3,500kg rating can all place a 2,500kg caravan inside the headline tow limit. The better tow vehicle is the exact grade that still has enough payload and GCM headroom after occupants, accessories, luggage and towball download are counted.
The example
| Item added to the ute | Example mass | Why it counts |
|---|---|---|
| Four occupants | 280kg | People count against payload. |
| Bullbar | 80kg | Use the fitted product's actual mass. |
| Canopy | 85kg | Canopies, drawers and trays consume payload quickly. |
| Fridge, recovery gear and luggage | 120kg | Small items accumulate. |
| Caravan towball download | 250kg | This acts on the tow vehicle and reduces payload. |
| Total payload used | 815kg | Before any extra fuel-container, roof or tray load. |
A nominal 2,500kg ATM caravan does not guarantee a 250kg ball load; measure the actual loaded trailer. Payload is normally GVM minus the vehicle's actual mass, not brochure space.
What the example reveals
An 815kg example load can fit a lighter work-oriented dual cab with healthy payload, yet leave little or no buffer in a heavy luxury or electrified grade. That does not make every lower-payload ute unsuitable; it means the buyer must remove accessories, reduce cargo, select another grade or change the towing setup.
Ranger, D-MAX, HiLux, Triton and BT-50 4x4 dual-cab grades deserve the first calculation. Do not carry a maximum cab-chassis payload figure across to a heavier pick-up.
Its 6,200kg listed GCM and up-to-1,000kg payload proposition are useful, but grade and accessory mass still determine the result. Kia's own calculator shows how quickly a bullbar, canopy and tow kit add weight.
Cannon Alpha PHEV's listed 685kg payload would be consumed by this 815kg example before the calculation reaches GCM. Shark 6 and Ranger PHEV outcomes depend on the grade; never assume the diesel figure applies.
Shortlist
| Use pattern | Starting shortlist | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Frequent highway towing | Ranger V6, D-MAX 3.0, BT-50 3.0 | Strong diesel torque and mature towing propositions; compare exact GCM and remaining payload. |
| Touring plus mixed off-road tracks | Ranger, HiLux, Triton, D-MAX | Broad accessory and touring ecosystems; Triton's relevant Super Select grades add useful mixed-surface flexibility. |
| Cabin space is a priority | Tasman, Ranger, Amarok | Passenger comfort matters on long trips, but heavier high-spec grades often sacrifice payload. |
| Want a PHEV | Ranger PHEV, Shark 6 Performance, Cannon Alpha PHEV | Only after a grade-specific payload/GVM/GCM calculation; electric range can fall substantially while towing. |
Four legal limits
The loaded trailer must not exceed the vehicle, towbar or other applicable rating.
The loaded ute—including towball download—must stay within Gross Vehicle Mass.
The loaded vehicle and trailer combination must remain within the applicable Gross Combined Mass definition and limit.
A combination can pass the broad totals yet overload an axle, tyre or coupling. Load distribution matters.
