Start before the shortlist
Do you really need a dual-cab ute?
Short answer: buy a dual cab when you regularly need a separate dirty-load area, work accessories, tray flexibility, serious towing or ute-specific off-road capability. If the vehicle is mainly a family commuter with occasional luggage and no heavy trailer, an SUV can be quieter, easier to park and more space-efficient inside.

Five checks a test drive should include
Unladen ride
Drive the roads used daily, not only a smooth dealer loop. Leaf-sprung utes can feel different when empty.
Secure luggage
A tub is large but not automatically weatherproof or theft-resistant. Price a canopy, roller cover or hard lid and count its mass.
Parking
Measure garage length and height after racks or suspension changes. Try a supermarket bay and school pickup.
Safety detail
Check the tested variant, rating year, child-occupant score and operation of driver-assistance systems—not only “five stars”.
Payload
Family accessories, occupants and towball download all count. A visually empty tub can sit behind a vehicle near GVM.
Hidden cost
The ute price is not the usable-ute price
Add the equipment needed to make the vehicle fit your life: towbar and brake controller, canopy or cover, tub liner, roof system, all-terrain tyres, recovery points, child-seat accessories and home charging for a PHEV. Then add the weight. A cheaper ute that needs $12,000 of equipment may not be cheaper or carry more than an SUV that works from delivery.

Choose a ute if at least one requirement is frequent and material
A dual cab is probably justified
You carry dirty, tall or hazardous loads weekly; need a work fit-out; tow a load that the chosen SUV cannot legally handle; or regularly use ute-specific tray and off-road accessories.
An SUV deserves a test drive first
The tub would normally be empty; all cargo is family luggage; most driving is urban; you rarely tow; and rear-seat comfort, enclosed storage and manoeuvrability matter every day.
