GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV payload explained: the number behind the 3500kg tow claim

The Cannon Alpha PHEV is compelling because it combines plug-in hybrid power, a large battery, low-range 4WD hardware, V2L and a 3500kg braked towing claim. The trade-off buyers need to read carefully is payload.

Why payload matters

Towing capacity is not the whole carrying story. Payload is consumed by people, accessories, luggage, tray load, canopy, tools, bull bar, fuel, towball download and sometimes dealer-fit extras. A 3500kg tow rating can still leave a tight real-world carrying budget.

Battery weight

PHEV utes carry battery hardware. That can help performance and electric driving, but it also affects mass planning.

Towball download

A heavy trailer can place hundreds of kilograms on the vehicle. That weight usually comes out of the payload allowance.

Accessories

Canopy, drawers, roof rack, bull bar and long-range touring gear can use payload before the first passenger climbs in.

Family touring

Four occupants, luggage and a caravan can be a harder test than the brochure tow figure suggests.

How to check your setup

StepQuestionWhy it matters
1What is the exact payload for this grade?Do not assume diesel, HEV and PHEV figures are the same.
2What accessories are fitted before delivery?Dealer or fleet fit-out can reduce usable payload immediately.
3What is the trailer towball download? This can be the hidden number that breaks the setup.
4What are GVM and GCM limits? They decide whether the whole loaded combination is legal and sensible.
