Why payload matters
Towing capacity is not the whole carrying story. Payload is consumed by people, accessories, luggage, tray load, canopy, tools, bull bar, fuel, towball download and sometimes dealer-fit extras. A 3500kg tow rating can still leave a tight real-world carrying budget.
Towball download
A heavy trailer can place hundreds of kilograms on the vehicle. That weight usually comes out of the payload allowance.
Accessories
Canopy, drawers, roof rack, bull bar and long-range touring gear can use payload before the first passenger climbs in.
Family touring
Four occupants, luggage and a caravan can be a harder test than the brochure tow figure suggests.
